What is MFA?

MFA stands for multi-factor authentication, which is a security method that requires users to provide two or more pieces of evidence (known as ‘factors’) to verify their identity when logging in to an online account. The factors usually take the form of something you know (i.e. your username and password) and something you have (e.g. an app on your mobile device).

For example, a user may need to enter a username and password (the first factor) and then a code sent to their phone (the second factor) to access their email account.

Why is MFA important?

MFA substantially reduces the likelihood of your, and your clients' data, being accessed by unauthorised parties.  With the financial industry a leading target for cyber-attacks, without MFA you’re increasing your risk of falling victim to a breach.

According to a report by Microsoft published in 2019, MFA can block over 99.9% of account compromise attacks, and users who enable MFA are 20 times less likely to be hacked than those who don't. MFA is also a recommended best practice by the National Cyber Security Centre the Financial Conduct Authority and ICO.
